"at the Haunted End of the Day" - Tony Palmer's penetrating and moving film tribute to William Walton.Tony Palmer’s 1981 film tribute to Walton is as fine a portrait of a living composer as there is. The film achieves a rare penetration of Walton’s state of mind as he looks back over his life. Much of it filmed on the Island home ‘La Mortella’ he made with his wife Susana off the Amalfi coast, it traces the lucky breaks of a musically gifted, working class lad from Oldham; the triumphs mingled with increasing disappointment and a growing sense of melancholy in the face of faltering energy and health. Deeply moving and not to be missed.
